Subject: RE: Dowling Family History

Brian:

Thanks for the nice response to my message, especially for putting my own adoption in perspective with the practice of the Clans/Septs of old adopting others.

I really don't know much about my family's history, so I tend to focus on the larger picture of Dowlings in general and their place in Ireland and it's history. My father, George Terrance, was born in Chicago in 1922. He came from a large family but his parents were divorced when he was 7 or 8. He died when I was 17. His father was George Edward, but I don't know any more about him as he died a year before I was adopted and my father didn't speak much about him.
After my father died his brother and sisters really had nothing to do with us anymore, primarily because we are Protestants, which always bothered my grandmother Mary Dowling.

We once had a large family reunion in Chicago when I was maybe 11 years old. I remember meeting an adult relative who came to the reunion from Dublin: Paddy Dowling and his wife Bridie...he worked for the newspaper there.

DOWLING TARTAN; In some places I have seen reference to a specific Dowling Tartan, but have never seen an example of it - if there really is one. Do you know anything about that? I know family tartans are rare in Ireland, mostly there are county or district tartans...but a few very prominent families did have their own. I would dearly prize a picture or sample of that tartan - and would have a second kilt made if the material was available. Perhaps we could search for the sett pattern numbers and have it worked up in either art or a woven example. I'm interested in your thoughts about that.

Best Regards, "Strong and Distinguished" Jim Dowling, Michigan, USA.

Hi Brian

Following are the families of Michael Dowling taken from my 'big list' of baptisms and marriages. The spelling of the surname is that used on the earliest documentation for that person.

1.
JOHN DOOLING 1789-January 1855 & Bridget Glasseen 1804-January 1855
William. d.o.b. approximately 1822 going by his age of 78 years when he died in 1900
as stated on Victorian Death Certificate No. 255.

aboard The Guiding Star.

The Guiding Star. John and Bridget Dooling, sons Michael, Edmund, and James, nieces Judith Ahern, and Bridget Glasheen were all lost at sea in 1855. Not 1854 as the Lancefield Victoria monument States, nor 1842 as the Castlegrace Co.Tipperary monument States. Their ship The Guiding Star left Liverpool on 9 January 1855 sailing for Australia. According to The Age newspaper of the 8th of September 1855, the ship was last spoken off the Brazilian coast at lat.16S, lon. 34W, on 12 February 1855. The ship was last sighted at about lat. 44S, lon.25W. in about April 1855 sailing into the 60 mile wide bay of a horseshoe shaped iceberg, in which it must have become entrapped, and eventually sunk.

There you have it. Once I get around to putting all the tree on disk I'll send you a copy. Ditto with the updated family, currently on 25 A4 pages.

The families left Ireland from about 1850, the first arriving in Sydney in 1852. The last to get here were my mob who arrived as late as 1875.

Thanks for your opinion on software. I'll try and track down FTM. I've got Microsoft Access, I'll have a bit of a play around with that also.

Cheers

Mick Dowling. (Dowling One Name Master.FTW)
