LLOYD (BREAKWELL) JOHN - 23796 Pte D Company 8th Battalion King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.
Born 1883 in Knowbury, the elder of two sons of Martha Lloyd his brother being William (1884). It appears Martha was either widowed or the boys were illegitimate since she married Henry Breakwell, a stonebreaker in a quarry, in 1886 and had four further children: Emily (c1887), Alice (1888), Charles (1891) and Zephaniah (1901). In 1911 the family lived at The Slack, Knowbury and John was working as a stonebreaker at a quarry like his stepfather. John was a Wesleyan Methodist.
John was called up Feb/March 1916 and landed in Salonika, Greece in July August 1916. During a raid on the enemy trenches on the night 26/27 November 1916 John was wounded receiving shrapnel wounds and a gunshot wound to a lung. The Hospital Ship Valdivia conveyed John in December 1916 to Alexandria, Egypt where is injury was now described as a gunshot wound to the spine. John died from the wound on 12 December 1916 and is buried in Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
The Battalion history describes the action carried out on the enemy’s salient known as ‘The Nose.’ ‘The raid was preceded by a heavy artillery preparation, the enemy’s wire being cut. The raiding parties entered the enemy’s trenches at 9.15 pm and successfully cleared the trenches, killing all enemy encountered and capturing two of the 4th Regiment of the 9th Bulgarian Division. All dugouts and defences were destroyed, and the raiding party withdrew in order. … The operation was carried out under very heavy artillery, trench mortar, machine gun and rifle fire from the enemy.” Other rank casualties were three killed, one missing and four wounded. John would have been one of the wounded.
His brother Lloyd, William (Breakwell) also served.

About 6.5 million were struck in silver and 110,000 were struck in bronze, the latter for award to Chinese, Maltese and Indian Labour Corps.
The British War Medal was instituted on 26 July 1919 for award to those who had rendered service between 5 August 1914, the day following the British declaration of war against the German Empire, and the armistice of 11 November 1918, both dates inclusive. Consideration was given to the award of clasps to commemorate certain battles and theatres of operations and some 68 clasps were proposed for Naval recipients and 79 for the Army. While the Naval clasps were authorised in August 1920, none were awarded and the idea was abandoned in 1923.

AwardMedal-Generic-Victory.jpg
The Victory Medal (also called the Inter-Allied Victory Medal) is a United Kingdom and British Empire First World War campaign medal. The design and ribbon was also adopted by Belgium, Brazil, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Portugal, Romania, Siam, Union of South Africa and the USA in accordance with the decision of the Inter-Allied Peace Conference at Versailles (a 'Winged Victory). A particular form of this historic Greek monument was chosen by each nation, except the nations in the Far East who issued the medal but with a different design. The dates of the war were in every case 1914 to 1918, except that of the British Empire, which gave the dates as illustrated (1914 to 1919). The medal was issued to all those who received the 1914 Star or the 1914–15 Star, and to most of those who were awarded the British War Medal - it was not awarded singly. These three medals were sometimes irreverently referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.

LLOYD, (BREAKWELL), WILLIAM - 201422 Pte. 7th Battalion South Wales Borderers (and later 93688 Pte. Royal Defence Corps).
Born in Knowbury 1884, the younger of two sons of Martha Lloyd his brother being John (1883). It appears Martha was either widowed or the boys were illegitimate since she married Henry Breakwell, a stonebreaker in a quarry, in 1886 and had four further children: Emily (c1887), Alice (1888), Charles (1891) and Zephaniah (1901). In 1911 the family lived at The Slack, Knowbury and William was working as a stonebreaker at a quarry like his stepfather.
William, aged 33 and single, attested under the name William Lloyd at Ludlow 4 December 1915 and was called up 31 May 1916. At his medical he was 5ft 5 ½” tall and had a 35” chest. On 12 March 1917 William landed at Salonika and it was whilst serving here that he contracted malaria that caused him to be sent back to the UK on 9 August1918. He was then transferred to the Royal Defence Corps but recurrent bouts of malaria meant he was discharged as physically unfit for service on 17 May 1915 and William received a small pension due to a 30% disability. It appears William married in 1919 probably to Sarah A Pardoe.
His brother Lloyd, (Breakwell) John (DOW) also served.
